Guwahati: On Wednesday floods in Assam resulted in the death of six people. The death toll<\/a> in floods in Assam has gone up to 38.<\/p>\n

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/a> said that there is marginal improvement in the flood scenario<\/a>. \u201cFlooding has affected 28 districts and a population of 1, 134,446 are affected across 2208 villages.\u201d<\/p>\n

The state government stated that crop areas of 42, 476.18 hectares are damaged. Around 52 bridges are damaged and there are breaches of embankment in eight places. There are around 130 relief camps<\/a>. Floods have damaged around 922 roads.<\/p>\n

Sarma said that several battalions of NDRF and SDRF<\/a> are working. \u201cWe have taken help from the Indian Air force<\/a> wherever required. We have decided to carry out a damage assessment and provide relief to the flood affected people by August 15.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cTo carry out this exercise ministers will fan out in different districts and camp for three days. I will go to Barak Valley for a couple of days. In September -October we will be able to allocate funds for the damaged infrastructure and get the same repaired by March next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Owing to the flood situation, offices in Manipur remained shut. Manipur Chief Minister<\/a> N. Biren Singh visited the flood affected areas in Imphal city and interacted with the rescue workers and affected families.Singh said that the government has taken necessary measures to assist the affected families while the preparations are underway to tackle and address any eventualities.The Meteorological Centre, IMD Imphal forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfalls is likely to occur in Manipur for the coming five days.<\/p>\n

Manipur Water Resources and Relief and Disaster Management Minister Awangbow Newmai<\/a> said the state is still vulnerable to flood as the major rivers are still flowing above the flood levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the major rivers are above flood level a few days of rain upstream can make the situation persist. I have appealed to the people to remain vigilant,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n

Newmai said that over 2,000 people have been evacuated and the rest have been moved to safer locations and relief camps before the flood water level increased.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
