Trump, a force behind Brexit and Britain\u2019s best known political disrupter, was elected to Parliament for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The new insurgent party he leads \u2014 Reform U.K. \u2014 was projected in the national exit poll to have captured four seats and a strong vote share, in an electoral system that typically punishes small parties. His party has been buoyed by an anti-immigration platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Farage won by a large margin in Clacton, a faded seaside town, where pre-election opinion surveys had suggested he had a strong chance of winning. He had tried and failed seven times before to be elected to Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe establishment are terrified, the Conservatives are terrified,\u201d Mr. Farage declared gleefully <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/26\/world\/europe\/nigel-farage-uk-politics.html\" title=\"\">in a speech last month<\/a>, referring to the governing party. Britain was \u201ca broken nation,\u201d he added, attacking targets ranging from asylum seekers to the BBC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A polarizing, pugilistic figure and a highly skilled communicator, Mr. Farage, 60, helped the Conservatives to a landslide victory in the last general election by not running candidates from his Brexit Party in many key areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This election, his plan was different: to destroy the Tories by poaching much of their vote, then replace \u2014 or take over \u2014 the party\u2019s remnants. Early in the campaign, after a journalist asked if he wanted to merge his upstart party with the Conservatives, he replied: \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/nigel-farage-richard-tice-reform-uk-r6scpkmpc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">More like a takeover, dear boy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Reform U.K. has come under fierce criticism in recent weeks after a number of its candidates were found to have made inflammatory statements. One said that Britain should have remained <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/article\/2024\/jun\/10\/reform-uk-defends-candidate-over-hitler-neutrality-comments\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">neutral in the fight against the Nazis<\/a>; another used <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/religion\/article\/jews-back-third-world-muslims-coming-to-uk-reform-candidate-said-gh3p0kmrg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">antisemitic tropes<\/a> by claiming that Jewish groups were \u201cagitating for the mass import into England of Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The party has blamed some of its problems on growing pains, has dropped some candidates and has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a44845fc-4eba-448d-a6c6-6f83ebcab367\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">threatened to take legal action against a private company<\/a> it paid to vet candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last week, an undercover investigation by Britain\u2019s Channel 4 News secretly filmed Reform campaigners in Clacton <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/28\/world\/europe\/racist-homophobic-reform-uk.html\" title=\"\">using racist and homophobic language<\/a>, with one using a slur to describe the prime minister, Rishi Sunak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But for two decades he has shaped Britain\u2019s political conversation, driving the Brexit cause, outflanking the Tories and pushing them further right. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/04\/world\/europe\/farage-parliament-reform-election.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigel Farage, a supporter of former President Donald J.
