{"id":89167,"date":"2024-07-06T17:10:36","date_gmt":"2024-07-06T17:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/06\/liberal-democrats-win-inverness-skye-and-west-ross-shire-the-final-election-result\/"},"modified":"2024-07-06T17:10:37","modified_gmt":"2024-07-06T17:10:37","slug":"liberal-democrats-win-inverness-skye-and-west-ross-shire-the-final-election-result","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/06\/liberal-democrats-win-inverness-skye-and-west-ross-shire-the-final-election-result\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal Democrats win Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire, the final election result"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/0f2c\/live\/60f697b0-1203-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.png?resize=1024,576&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Liberal Democrats win Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire, the final election result\" title=\"Liberal Democrats win Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire, the final election result\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Liberal Democrats have won the <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/election\/2024\/uk\/constituencies\/S14000094\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire<!-- --><\/a> constituency, the last seat in the UK to announce its general election result.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Candidate Angus MacDonald gained a majority of 2,160 over the SNP&#8217;s Drew Hendry.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The SNP candidate had already conceded defeat after a recount delayed the result.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It means the Liberal Democrats have won 72 Westminster seats,  six of which are in Scotland, meaning they have overtaken the Scottish Conservatives.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The outcome had originally been expected at about 05:00 on Friday, but there was a recount &#8211; then candidates were told the votes would need to be counted again on Saturday morning.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Returning officer Derek Brown said the delay was due to a discrepancy between the verified votes total and the provisional number of counted votes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Local businessman Angus MacDonald was elected after he received 18,159 votes, while the SNP candidate was second with 15,999 votes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Former MP Mr Hendry had already conceded defeat to his Lib Dem rival. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a statement on Friday evening he said it had been &#8220;an absolute joy&#8221; to serve the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey for the last nine years &#8211; and that he was disappointed not to be continuing as an MP for Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire boundary.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The seat is new <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-69053055\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">under boundary changes<!-- --><\/a>, made up of the previous Ross, Skye and Lochaber and Inverness and Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey constituencies.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">These seats were both held by the SNP.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ian Blackford who was MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber and Inverness announced before the election he would not stand for re-election.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">All other constituency results were announced on Friday.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Liberal Democrats now have six seats in Scotland, making them the third biggest party in the country in terms of MPs.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour won a landslide victory in Scotland with 37 seats \u2013 a gain of 36.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The SNP, who won 48 seats in 2019, have been reduced to nine, while the Scottish Conservatives have five seats, down one from their previous total.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cqe6y0jvmrdo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Liberal Democrats have won the Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire constituency, the last seat in the UK to announce its general election result.
