Paparazzi hungered for exclusive photos of Lady Diana. And everywhere, you heard the Spice Girls telling you to spice up your life.<\/p>\n<p>The year was 1997 and it was the last time, until now, that Labour had seized power from the Tories, kicking a Conservative prime minister out of Downing Street.<\/p>\n<p>Then as now, Labour won a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/the-labour-party-has-won-this-general-election-sunak-concedes-defeat-13162921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">landslide victory<\/a><\/strong>, ending more than a decade of Tory government &#8211; 18 years in 1997 and 14 years now.<\/p>\n<p>But while it&#8217;s tempting to draw parallels between Tony Blair and Keir Starmer, much has changed in Britain in the last 27 years.<\/p>\n<p>Blair inherited from his Tory predecessor, John Major, a healthy economy, and started his premiership in a decade of relative stability and prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>Starmer has to grapple with a cost of living crisis, the aftermath of Brexit and the COVID pandemic, and at least two major global crises in the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/election-results-labour-conservative-starmer-sunak-latest-live-updates-12593360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow politics live<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Blair outside No 10 a day after his 1997 victory. The approach of the new millennium added to a sense of excitement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It felt as if a fresh era was beginning,&#8221; Blair wrote in his memoir A Journey, recalling the enthusiasm of a crowd assembled outside No 10 the day after he won the vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It ran not just through the crowd but through the country. It affected everyone, lifting them up, giving them hope, making them believe all things were possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The economy was growing and inflation was low. They have few heroes, no anthems, no style they call their own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 1997 however, Time revised its assessment to describe a more hopeful, active cohort.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are flocking to technology start-ups, founding small businesses and even taking up causes-all in their own way. They are making waves on the Web, making movies in and out of Hollywood, making money, spending money,&#8221; it wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Slapped with the label Generation X, they&#8217;ve turned the tag into a badge of honor. They are X-citing, X-igent, X-pansive. They&#8217;re the next big thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Boomers, beware!
