Women in sundresses milled around off-white sofas, sipping fizzy mocktails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though the camels sprinting past were the main event, Mr. Dean, better known as Swizz Beatz, felt as if all eyes in the room were on him \u2014 one of the newest competitors in Saudi Arabia\u2019s deep-pocketed camel racing scene. Four years since he entered and won his first race, he has spent millions of dollars to buy 48 racing camels, ascending into the most elite circles of the sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen you discover it, you enter into a whole other world,\u201d said Mr. Dean, 45, whose team of camels, \u201cSaudi Bronx,\u201d has won trophies across the region and deepened his attachment to the kingdom, which he first visited in 2006.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He now travels to Saudi Arabia so often that he considers it a second home. He is a co-founder of a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2440066\/saudi-arabia\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">roller-skating rink<\/a> in the desert retreat of AlUla, where the camel race was held, and keeps an apartment in the capital, Riyadh; a few years ago, he was granted Saudi citizenship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">All of this would have been highly improbable not long ago. But the absurd has become ordinary in the new Saudi Arabia, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unleashes seismic <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/29\/world\/middleeast\/halloween-saudi-arabia.html\" title=\"\">social changes<\/a> while deepening political <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/17\/world\/middleeast\/khashoggi-crown-prince-saudi.html\" title=\"\">repression<\/a>, reshaping the conservative Islamic country in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ten years ago, music and gender mixing were effectively banned in public. Today, young Saudis dance at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nofomo.sa\/reel\/C3SgVMior-t\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">raves in abandoned hospitals<\/a>, and women \u2014 who until 2018 had been barred from driving \u2014 are increasingly living <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/81a8267e-1cc9-11ea-97df-cc63de1d73f4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on their own<\/a>, buying apartments and driving themselves to work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The 38-year-old crown prince is an avowed authoritarian, and he has coupled the social opening with a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/21\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-dissent-crackdown.html\" title=\"\">crackdown on dissent<\/a>, detaining hundreds of critical Saudis across the political spectrum. In January, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/manahel-al-otaibi\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Manahel al-Otaibi<\/a> \u2014 a fitness instructor who had campaigned on social media against Saudi Arabia\u2019s system of male guardianship over women, which Prince Mohammed has largely dismantled \u2014 was sentenced to 11 years in prison.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the prince has a keen interest in using the kingdom\u2019s oil wealth to build soft power, crafting a more welcoming image by promoting Saudi culture, art and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/culinary.moc.gov.sa\/en\/about-the-commission\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cuisine<\/a>, and winning over <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/10\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-leader-prince-mohammed.html\" title=\"\">politicians<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/24\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-christian-tourists.html\" title=\"\">tourists<\/a> alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Camel racing, a sport beloved by Bedouins across the Arabian Peninsula, is a small part of that push. The kingdom\u2019s goal is for it to become \u201can internationally recognized sport,\u201d Mahmoud al-Balawi, head of the Saudi Camel Racing Federation, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Basma Khalifa, a 42-year-old woman from AlUla who was attending the camel race, said, \u201cIt\u2019s really nice for the foreigners to come,\u201d adding, \u201cJust like we know their culture, they get to know our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Mr. Dean was once an outlier, American celebrities appear in Saudi Arabia regularly now, often drawn by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/18\/sports\/soccer\/lionel-messi-saudi-arabia.html\" title=\"\">lucrative deals<\/a>, and no longer deterred by the frequent criticism of the kingdom by human rights groups. Many of them end up in AlUla, an area filled with twisted rock formations and ancient ruins that is the centerpiece of Prince Mohammed\u2019s drive to turn the kingdom into a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/travel\/saudi-arabia-tourism.html\" title=\"\">global tourism destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Will Smith visited last year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/arts-culture\/pop-culture\/2023\/03\/18\/will-smith-attends-alula-camel-cup-in-saudi-arabia\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">attending a camel race<\/a> with Mr. Dean. Johnny Depp <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CncicFnt1BJ\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=c1806cd0-a311-49d1-9b59-225ea547e76a\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posed for a selfie<\/a> in AlUla with Saudi Arabia\u2019s culture minister. Even the elusive hip-hop star Lauryn Hill performed in AlUla recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s funny to see,\u201d Mr. Dean said. \u201cEspecially going back to the people that were criticizing me and telling me not to go, and now they\u2019re asking me what\u2019s the best place to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the tournament in AlUla, held this spring, camels foamed at the mouth from exertion as they ran around the windswept track, knees wobbling. Instead of jockeys, robots sat on their backs \u2014 a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/restofworld.org\/2020\/qatar-camel-racing-robots\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">change made years ago<\/a> after the practice of using child jockeys was found to be riddled with human rights abuses. A herd of SUVs followed closely, filled with trainers commanding the robots by remote control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Behind the velvet ropes of the V.I.P. section, Mr. Dean was seated near the head of the racing federation and surrounded by Saudi princes. They cheered him on for a victory and reassured him when one of his camels, Enzo, came in fourth place instead \u2014 helping Mr. Dean win around $200,000 from the total prize pot of more than $20 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dean\u2019s Saudi citizenship is a sign that powerful Saudis consider his relationship with the kingdom valuable; citizenship is a rare privilege, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/saudi-arabia-grants-citizenship-group-talented-expats-2021-11-15\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bestowed<\/a> by royal edict and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/saudigazette.com.sa\/article\/520159\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">unobtainable<\/a> even for most second- or third-generation foreign residents. Many celebrities and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-06\/saudi-arabia-is-using-instagram-influencers-to-improve-its-image\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">social media influencers<\/a> who have come to Saudi Arabia in recent years are attracted by sponsorships or deals, but Mr. Dean said that was not what drew him there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou could easily come to Saudi and be transactional \u2014 there\u2019s endless opportunities,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I just wanted to have the freedom to just have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Born in the Bronx and married to the singer Alicia Keys, Mr. Dean has worked with Jay-Z, Beyonc\u00e9 and Kanye West, among other artists. He once rapped that he was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7XL84zQZ1nw\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201chood rich.\u201d<\/a> These days, he is just regular rich \u2014 very rich, actually, replete with corporate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zackomalleygreenburg\/2016\/09\/07\/one-man-brand-man-inside-swizz-beatzs-bacardi-bonanza\/?sh=55e5e93f5192\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">deals<\/a>, board memberships, and investments in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/inside-alicia-keys-and-swizz-beatzs-art-filled-modernist-home-overlooking-the-pacific-ocean\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">real estate<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/13\/t-magazine\/swizz-beatz-art.html\" title=\"\">contemporary art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He is Muslim, and his grandfather performed pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia in the 1970s. So when Mr. Dean first visited the kingdom in 2006, traveling there did not seem like such a strange idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He returned often and found himself fascinated by camel racing. Several years ago, he decided to explore it for himself. He called Saudi friends to help him search for the best camel trainers and started assembling his team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a rookie to the sport, Mr. Dean made mistakes, selling some of his fastest camels when competitors offered him enormous sums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now he understands how seriously people take the sport, and that some of the Emirati and Qatari sheikhs he competes against can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabianbusiness.com\/industries\/industries-culture-society\/dubai-crown-prince-buys-camel-for-record-2-7mn-51145\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spend millions of dollars<\/a> on a single camel. He leaves the decisions about which camels to buy, and how to race them, to his Saudi trainers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m just bringing the cool factor to it,\u201d Mr. Dean said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the races in AlUla finished, Ms. Keys, his wife, called him, and he flipped his phone camera around to show her a sandstorm brewing outside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On his way out, he strolled through the venue with a glass of pomegranate juice, stopping for photos with curious onlookers. Few people in the camel racing world know him for his music, and he loves that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s like I\u2019m a whole new person,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As darkness fell, he visited a pop-up shop near the racetrack where his Saudi Bronx-branded merchandise was for sale. Among the offerings: an $80 T-shirt that depicted the hip-hop star Tupac Shakur in a Saudi headdress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Falih al-Buluwi, a prominent camel trainer who has worked with Mr. Dean, entered the shop with an entourage of half a dozen men. They posed for photographs with him and danced to Saudi music together, clapping and swaying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Dean once lost friends and business over his association with Saudi Arabia, he said. But he ignores the criticism of that, arguing that \u201cno place is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHate across the world would be less if people traveled more and spent time with different cultures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That evening, he stepped into the D.J. booth of the roller skating rink he had helped found in AlUla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Disco balls sent lights dancing across the floor as he played classics by Saudi singers, intermingling them with retro hip-hop hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Scores of people watched from the sidelines as skaters circled the open-sky rink, some skilled and others uncertain, tumbling to the ground.
