NEW DELHI: The central government reached out to IIT Madras<\/a> to identify the beneficiaries of wrongdoing in the NEET-UG<\/a> 2024.<\/p>\n

After conducting data analytics, as sought by the Supreme Court<\/a> earlier this week, IIT Madras has opined that, as per the analysis, \u201cthere is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted, leading to abnormal scores\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an affidavit filed by the education ministry<\/a> late Wednesday evening, the Centre has told the top court that IIT Madras has further opined that \u201cthere is an overall increase in marks obtained by students, specifically in the range of 550 to 720. This increase is seen across cities and centres\u201d.<\/p>\n

The analysis further says that \u201cthis is attributed to 25% reduction in syllabus. In addition, candidates obtaining such high marks are spread across multiple cities and multiple centers indicating very less likelihood of malpractice\u201d.<\/p>\n

IIT Madras was requested on Monday by the ministry to ascertain through data analytics if there were any suspected cases who could have indulged in wrongdoing and other red flags, which indicated any aberration in the spread of top performers\/candidates. A set of parameters which shall form the basis of the analytics were also requested to be devised, reads ministry\u2019s affidavit.<\/p>\n

The ministry has submitted that \u201cif an exercise is to be conducted by NTA<\/a> and by the Union government so as to identify any further beneficiaries of the question paper leakage, a considered decision at the policy level would have to be taken by the government on the status of the counselling\u201d.Assuring the top court that it is committed that no beneficiary of wrongdoing gets any benefit, the Centre has submitted that \u201c23 lakh students are not required to be burdened with fresh test merely based upon unsupported apprehensions\u201d.Regarding the counselling process, the ministry said that counselling process for 2024-2025 will be conducted in four months starting from third week of July. For any candidate, if it is found that he\/she has been the beneficiary of any malpractice, candidature of such person would be cancelled at any stage during the counselling process of even afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, seat allocation will depend on the timing of such cancellation. For the first and second round, candidates are allowed to change seats as per options exercised by them. So, if cancellation is done before beginning of the third round, it will not have any impact on overall counselling process and allocation of seats. Third round of counselling process is expected to start in second week of September,\u201d the affidavit reads.<\/p>\n

It adds: \u201cIf candidature is cancelled after third round, vacant seats can still be offered in subsequent round. However, candidates who have already been allocated seats in earlier rounds will not be able to participate in subsequent round.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ministry has further stated that \u201chowever, if the candidature of any candidate is cancelled after the conclusion of four rounds of counselling, the seats so vacated can be put up for additional rounds of counselling, if so approved by the court\u201d.<\/p>\n

The government has informed the court that to ensure that the examination process is made more \u201crobust and insulant to any kind of malpractice\u201d, the Centre has constituted a high-level committee of experts headed by former ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan. The case is slated for hearing on Thursday.
