New Delhi: With China<\/a> being non-committal on Teesta water conservation and associated SEZ project<\/a>, Bangladesh Prime Minister<\/a> Sheikh Hasina<\/a> has announced that India<\/a>, as the next-door neighbour, has the right on the project and she would prefer New Delhi to implement the project.<\/p>\n

It appears that China remained non-committal on backing the project during Hasina’s recent Beijing trip. ET had earlier reported how Hasina cut short her China visit after Beijing backtracked on a financial package of $5 billion and did not offer her adequate protocol.<\/p>\n

“…I would prioritise that India will do it (read Teesta project<\/a>). India holds the water of Teesta River<\/a>…. So, they should do the project and they would give whatever is necessary here if they do the project,” Hasina said in Dhaka on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

“We have to implement the Teesta project. China has made an offer to us, they did a feasibility study. India has also made an offer, India will do a feasibility study. After this is done, we will take what is appropriate for us. But I would give greater priority to this being done by India because India has held up the Teesta’s waters. If they have to give us the water, they should implement the project. If they do the project, they will give us what we need,” she said.<\/p>\n

The Bangladesh PM was replying to a question from a reporter on her China trip. Hasina’s comments may also be viewed as expressing her displeasure on outcomes achieved from the China trip.<\/p>\n

India has decided to send a technical team to Bangladesh for the proposed Teesta river conservation and management project, the PM had told reporters after his summit with Hasina here last month.
