Kolkata: West Bengal Panchayat department<\/a> is planning to create a marketing board dedicated to SHGs and FPOs<\/a> in the Panchayat<\/a> Department. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to make a marketing Board separately dedicated to SHGs and FPOs in the Panchayat Department. Market linkages<\/a>, capacity building, livelihood opportunities<\/a> and research will be looked into by the Board. We are forwarding the proposals to the state government,\u201d P Ulaganathan, Secretary in West Bengal Panchayat & Rural Development Department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have chosen 150 women from Self-Help Groups and IIM Kolkata<\/a> are training them. We are funding them. Earlier their income was Rs 10-12,000 but it has touched Rs 10 lakhs now. Their products are available in New Delhi and Mumbai. It has happened with the help of IIM-Joka,\u201d Ulganathan said, adding \u201cWe are doing entrepreneurship programmes<\/a> in the state\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the entire country, the work of these 150 SHGs have been appreciated. We will give a big presentation in front of the Central government. The number of Lakhpati Didis will be highest in Bengal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen 30-40% Farmers Producers Organization Self (FPOs) are working very well while another 60% are defunct. The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry is also working on the FPOs. So, we will discuss with various forums and see how these FPOs can be taken forward. How their products can be sold and how market linkages can be created,\u201d the senior IAS said.<\/p>\n

Krishi Sanlaap 2024<\/a>, a joint initiative of The Bengal Chambers of Commerce and Industry and PRADAN, a leading NGO working for the prosperity of smallholder farmers, was held in Kolkata. The theme of the multi-stakeholder seminar was \u201cUnleashing Potential of Smallholder Farmers<\/a> through Sustainable FPOs\u201d where a Coffee Table Book on \u201cEmpowering Women, Elevating Communities\u201d was released by the dignitaries. The book captures success stories of women smallholder farmers and other communities who have benefitted by being part of FPOs.Krishi Sanlaap 2024 brought to light about successes and challenges of running sustainable FPOs, and suggested what needs to be further done to make FPOs independent, resilient institutions in their own right, serving the needs of the smallholder farmers, and energising rural economies.
