{"id":97181,"date":"2024-07-18T15:34:41","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T15:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/18\/pret-change-to-coffee-subscription-sparks-backlash\/"},"modified":"2024-07-18T15:34:41","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T15:34:41","slug":"pret-change-to-coffee-subscription-sparks-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/18\/pret-change-to-coffee-subscription-sparks-backlash\/","title":{"rendered":"Pret change to coffee subscription sparks backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/b864\/live\/83c598a0-4506-11ef-95e9-f5f2d4f7082d.jpg?fit=1024,576&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Pret change to coffee subscription sparks backlash\" title=\"Pret change to coffee subscription sparks backlash\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Subscribers have reacted with anger on social media after coffee chain  Pret A Manger said it would change its coffee subscription deal after a &#8220;rethink&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Under the current system, which Pret said &#8220;almost seemed &#8216;too good to be true'&#8221;, subscribers can order up to five coffees a day for a monthly fee of \u00a330.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">From September, Pret said it would instead offer half price off up to five coffees a day for \u00a310 a month and end the one fifth discount on food. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The move has led to a backlash from current subscribers on social media, but a retail expert backed the move, stating the old model &#8220;alienated&#8221; non-subscribers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Pret said it had &#8220;never really got comfortable&#8221; with the dual pricing system as it announced it was scrapping the current offer.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a letter sent to customers, managing director Clare Clough said the introduction of the coffee subscription during the Covid pandemic had been an  &#8220;innovative way&#8221; maintain customers and attract new ones.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She said it brought &#8220;customers back into our shops with an offer that almost seemed &#8216;too good to be true'&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Four years and over a quarter of a billion coffees later, we have decided that it&#8217;s time to rethink how it works,&#8221; she added.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But subscribers criticised the move on social media, with one calling it a &#8220;massive, monumental&#8221; error and others saying they would switch to rival coffee chains.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AdamGL94\/status\/1813922554417234214\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">One customer<!-- --><\/a> called it an &#8220;own goal&#8221; and a &#8220;big big mistake&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Back in 2020, Pret, which has more than 650 shops, most of which are in London and the south of England, initially charged \u00a320 for its subscription, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-65396790\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">before increasing it last year.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms Clough said its new offer was at a &#8220;much more accessible price than the \u00a3360 a year people have to pay for the current scheme&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Given the majority of our customers are not Club Pret subscribers, our priority now is to focus on better value for everyone,&#8221; she added.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Pret refused to disclose how many Club Pret customers it has.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Retail analyst Natalie Berg told the BBC that while Pret was &#8220;right&#8221; to target and reward its most loyal customers, the chain had &#8220;alienated everyone else&#8221; in the process.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Consumers today want immediate value.
