Approval was granted to construct nearly all these houses. The finance ministry subsequently allowed the release of funds to beneficiaries for six more months through September 2024 to ensure the completion of houses against liabilities committed under the scheme as of March 31. About 26.36 million houses have been built so far since November 2016 when the scheme was rolled out by revamping the erstwhile Indira Awas Yojana, show the rural development ministry data.

“Since over 3.1 million rural houses are at various stages of construction, the fund release period needs to be extended beyond September,” said the official. Under the PMAY-G, the Centre bears 60% of the construction cost in most states, which goes up to 90% in North East and 100% for union territories, while state governments pitch in with the rest.

New houses under PMAY-G
The interim budget in February proposed the construction of 20 million additional rural houses under the scheme over the next five years. In fact, the first Cabinet decision of the Modi 3.0 government in early June was to approve this proposal and another to build 10 million houses for urban areas.

ET had on June 11 reported that the government was considering a proposal to raise the assistance for beneficiaries under the scheme to up to ₹2 lakh per house from the current ₹1.2-1.3 lakh, depending on the region. The enhanced support would apply to the new houses, which could be announced in next week’s full budget for FY25.

Unfinished houses
About 1.16 million of the 4.57 million houses in West Bengal already sanctioned under the scheme remain to be completed, as the Centre’s payment has been withheld for now due to alleged irregularities in the implementation of the scheme by the state government.Similarly, in Odisha, about half a million of the 2.72 million sanctioned houses are yet to be completed, showed the rural development ministry data.

Source link

New Delhi: The finance ministry could approve the release of funds under the government‘s flagship rural housing scheme for six more months through March 2025 to enable the completion of about 3.14 million unfinished houses, a senior official told ET.
