Tensions are mounting along the Kanwar Yatra route<\/a> in Uttar Pradesh<\/a> following a new government directive requiring all shops and eateries to prominently display the names of their owners and employees. This order, which affects a vast swath of the yatra route leading to Haridwar in Uttarakhand, has sparked concern among local traders, particularly those from minority communities.<\/p>\n

On a busy road in Muzaffarnagar, the owner of Kashif Confectionery, Furkan, expressed his dismay to TOI. \u201cWe never consider whether a shopkeeper is Hindu or Muslim when we celebrate Ramzan<\/a> and Eid. Why are we being asked to disclose our identity now? Many customers may just turn away upon seeing my shop’s name,\u201d he told TOI.<\/p>\n

The new directive, which initially applied in Muzaffarnagar, has since been extended to Shamli and Saharanpur districts and is now affecting the entire Kanwar route<\/a>. The order mandates that all establishments selling food display the names of their owners and employees, leading to widespread anxiety and economic impact.<\/p>\n

In response to the directive, many Muslim traders have reported feeling the strain. Rizwan Chaudhary, who owns the Tiranga Dhaba on Shamli-Panipat Road, was instructed by the Kairana police to shut down his business for nearly a month. \u201cI am staring at a big loss. I only serve pure vegetarian food. I don\u2019t even use onions and garlic. Why do I have to do this?\u201d Chaudhary lamented. \u201cI was ready to put my name on the board outside my establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The order has prompted a broader political and social debate. Kapil Dev Agarwal, BJP MLA from Muzaffarnagar, defended the directive. \u201cThere is nothing wrong with this order. Some establishments use Hindu names while their owners are Muslim. We have no objection to that. The problem arises when they sell non-vegetarian dishes,\u201d Agarwal stated.<\/p>\n

As per a TOI report, members of the Muslim community view the move as a form of economic marginalisation. Mohammad Irshad, who runs Shri Khatu Shyam Tourist Dhaba in Bijnor, remarked, \u201cThe irony is that the order will hurt both communities. My establishment serves pure vegetarian food, and my employees are Hindus. If customers see my name, footfall will decrease, and we will suffer losses regardless of our faith. Business must not be dragged into communal politics.\u201dThe economic repercussions of the order are already visible. Shafaqat Ali, a worker at Sakshi Tourist Dhaba on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, was placed on “forced leave” as a result of the directive. \u201cOur employer asked us to go on leave until the yatra ends on Aug 6,\u201d Ali explained. His employer, Lokesh Bharti, added, \u201cA week ago, police asked us to write down names of the owner and employees at the dhaba. They said I could not keep them at my dhaba if their names are not displayed. I decided they must stay away for now.\u201dDr. Dinesh Kumar, an economics professor at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, informed TOI about the broader implications. \u201cBesides political repercussions, economic impact must be considered while making such decisions. The economy is intertwined with the social fabric in smaller towns, and balance is crucial. If that fabric is ripped to shreds, everyone suffers, regardless of faith or caste. No festival can be seen in isolation as various communities contribute.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerns about personal safety have also been raised. Mohd Imran, a fruit seller from Meerut, worried about the risks associated with displaying his name. \u201cOnce my name is written on my cart, who will guarantee my safety? Anyone can misbehave with me or rob me. And what happens if a riot breaks out? I will be a sitting duck,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The new directive continues to stir anxiety among traders and community members, underscoring the need for careful consideration of both social and economic impacts in policy implementation.<\/p>\n
