In a heartfelt statement to ET, Govindan described Karunya as “the first wedding anniversary gift to me and my wife from the heavens.” Expressing his sorrow and frustration, he criticised AstraZeneca’s recent admission in court documents acknowledging that their vaccine can lead to rare side effects, including blood clots. Govindan lamented that this admission came too late, after numerous lives have already been lost.
Blaming multiple entities for his daughter’s death, Govindan said, “The manufacturer Serum Institute of India, the Government, regulatory bodies – all bear responsibility for my daughter’s and many others’ deaths.”
He highlighted the alleged negligence of authorities in responding to early warning signs, citing missed opportunities to prevent tragedies like Karunya’s passing.
“Both Government and Serum Institute knew at least in February 2021 itself when Mr Dilip Lunawat contacted them multiple times and they were aware of her death on March 1st from the complications from Vaccine,” he said.
Expressing his determination to seek justice, Govindan emphasised that if their current legal pursuits do not yield adequate redress, they are prepared to file new lawsuits against those they believe are accountable for the deaths. “For the sake of justice and to prevent a recurrence of this atrocity,” he declared, “we will pursue legal action against any and all perpetrators of this tragedy.”
Govindan also revealed that families of eight victims have united in their pursuit of justice, underscoring their shared resolve to hold accountable those they believe are responsible for the devastating loss of their loved ones.
