Schools in Haryana will be closed on Friday, May 10, in observance of Parshuram Jayanti, as per media reports. Initially designated solely for government schools, this holiday now extends to both government and private institutions across the state, including areas such as Faridabad, Gurgaon, and Dayalbagh.

Similarly, in Punjab, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions will also remain closed on May 10, coinciding with a holiday for government offices. Prior to this, Punjab observed a holiday on May 1 for Labour Day.

Does Parshuram Jayanti mark a public holiday?
Parshuram Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram, holds significance in various states including Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat. Rajasthan has declared May 10 as a public holiday to honour this occasion. In 2022, Haryana’s Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, designated Lord Parshuram Jayanti as a gazetted holiday in the state.

What is the significance of Parshuram Jayanti celebration?
Parshuram Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Also known as Akshay Tritiya, it is believed that Lord Parshuram was born during the first quarter of the day and night of Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya. Hindus consider this day auspicious for initiating new ventures or business endeavors. According to the Hindu calendar, Lord Parshuram’s birthday falls in the Vaisakh month on the ‘tritiya’ (third day) of ‘shukla paksha’.
