Delhi swelters as mercury hits season’s highest at 42.5°C, IMD warns of possible heatwave on Saturday
The mercury soared to 42.5 degrees Celsius in the national capital on Thursday, marking the hottest day so far this summer, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This temperature surpassed the previous record set on May 8, when the mercury touched 42 degrees Celsius.

The IMD reported that Thursday’s maximum temperature was two notches above normal. Throughout the day, the relative humidity in Delhi fluctuated between 25 per cent and 65 per cent.

The IMD’s seven-day forecast indicates that isolated areas in Delhi may experience heatwave conditions on Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius. Heatwave conditions are declared when the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees or more above normal, reaching at least 45 degrees Celsius.

Interestingly, there was no heatwave in Delhi in May 2023, despite the highest temperature recorded that month being 43.7 degrees Celsius. In contrast, 2022 witnessed four heatwave days in the capital, as per IMD data.

Looking ahead, the weather office predicts partly cloudy skies for Friday, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 43 and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
