Emergency surgery rescues Tamil Nadu boy from life-threatening toothbrush incident
PUDUCHERRY: Surgeons at the Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences (MGPGIDS) successfully saved a 14-year-old boy’s life by surgically removing a toothbrush lodged in his throat. The incident occurred when the boy‘s brother playfully patted him on the back of the head while he was brushing his teeth. The boy, R Deebesh, son of Ramesh from Kiliyanur in Tamil Nadu‘s Villupuram district, was gasping for breath after the toothbrush became stuck in his throat. He was admitted to the institute in critical condition on Saturday.

Under the leadership of MGPGIDS dean Dr. S. P. K. Kennedy Babu and Professor Dr. K. Shankar, the surgical team performed a complex exploratory procedure under local anesthesia. The 45-minute operation successfully removed the toothbrush from Deebesh’s throat on June 8.

“The front part of the toothbrush was completely lodged in the boy’s throat after his brother playfully patted his head while he was brushing. He arrived breathless and in a life-threatening state. We performed an emergency procedure and removed the toothbrush without causing any damage. The boy recovered quickly and was discharged the same day,” said Dr. Babu.

Dr. Babu advised against brushing while driving, talking on the phone, or engaging in playful activities to prevent such freak accidents. “A simple toothbrush, essential for maintaining oral hygiene, can become a dangerous object if not used carefully,” he noted.
