The accident, which occurred close to Rangapani station, resulted in at least five fatalities and left approximately 30 individuals injured. Following this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences.
“The railway accident in West Bengal is saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to officials and took stock of the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist the affected,” PM Modi said on social media.
He added that Vaishnaw was heading to the site of the mishap.
“Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination. Injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached site,” Vaishnaw said in a social media post on X.
Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said rescue operations are underway at the spot. “A tragic accident has occurred in the NFR zone. Swift rescue operations are underway with coordinated efforts from Railways, NDRF, and SDRF. The injured are being quickly moved to hospitals. Senior officials are on-site to supervise,” he said on X.
West Bengal railway incident
On Monday, a collision between a goods train and the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express near Rangapani station in West Bengal led to at least five deaths and approximately 30 injuries, according to police reports. Railway officials stated that the impact caused three rear compartments of the express train to derail after being struck from behind by the goods train’s locomotive.
Rescue efforts are ongoing at the scene, located about 30 km from New Jalpaiguri station in North Bengal, with the injured being transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“Five persons have died in the accident till now and around 30 people suffered injuries, which are not fatal,” a senior police officer said.
