NIA chargesheets four ULFA (I) members in connection with military station grenade attacks in Assam

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has linked two grenade attacks at military stations in Assam to the proscribed outfit ULFA (I). The attacks took place in Lichubari, Jorhat district, on December 14th, and earlier at an Army camp in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district. These incidents are part of a larger conspiracy targeting military sites in the northeastern state, allegedly orchestrated from Myanmar.

On December 15th, 2023, ULFA (I) issued a press release claiming responsibility for the attacks. The complex plan was reportedly masterminded by ULFA (I) SS Captain Abhijeet Gogoi, also known by various aliases including Kanak Gogoi, Rumel Asom, Aicheng Asom, and Aishang Asom, along with ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah. Another significant figure involved in the conspiracy was identified as SS Brigadier Arunudoy Dohutia.

NIA’s investigation in the Jorhat case, coded RC-01/2024/NIA/GUW, has led to the arrest of three individuals: Biplab Baruah, Biraj Kachari, and Achyut Gogoi.

All three have been chargesheeted along with SS Captain Aicheng Asom, who remains absconding. The charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA (P) A), and the Explosives Substance Act.

The NIA had taken over the Jorhat case from Assam Police as it was connected to the earlier attack on Kakopathar Army Camp. In relation to the Kakopathar attack, the NIA had previously filed charges against six individuals.
