From ‘Sar pe laal topi Rusi’ to ‘Disco Dancer’: PM Modi’s ode to Bollywood classics at diaspora event in Russia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the Indian diaspora in Moscow, referred to Russia as a longstanding “trusted friend” that has shared India’s joys and sorrows. He highlighted the enduring cultural bonds between the two nations, citing the iconic Hindi song ‘Sar pe laal topi Rusi‘ from the 1955 Bollywood film ‘Shree 420’.

“The song ‘Sar pe laal topi Rusi, phir bhi dil hai Hindustani’ was once sung in every household here,” PM Modi remarked, underscoring its timeless sentiments.

Raj Kapoor, revered as a cultural ambassador, gained immense popularity in Russia during the 1950s with films like ‘Shree 420’ and ‘Awara’, which remain cherished and are still broadcast with Russian subtitles on many networks.

Highlighting the impact of Indian cinema, PM Modi noted how Raj Kapoor’s legacy influenced subsequent generations of stars, including Mithun Chakraborty, whose dynamic performances in films like ‘Disco Dancer’ captivated Russian audiences in the 1980s.

PM Modi expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for his role in strengthening bilateral ties over more than two decades, emphasising the frequent meetings between them that have fostered mutual trust and respect.

“I would especially like to appreciate the leadership of my dear friend, President Putin. He has done a wonderful job to strengthen this partnership for more than two decades. This is the sixth time I have come to Russia in the last 10 years and in these years we have met each other 17 times. All these meetings have increased trust and respect,” he said.
