SC dismisses ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh’s plea challenging CBI probe in financial irregularities case
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition by Sandip Ghosh, former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision to hand over an investigation into financial irregularities at the hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, ruled that Ghosh did not have the legal standing to be involved as a party in the case.

The CBI probe was initiated following an August 23 order from the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj. The court directed the CBI to investigate financial irregularities at the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure as principal, based on a petition by whistleblower Akhtar Ali, a former deputy medical superintendent at the hospital. The investigation is being closely monitored by the court.

Ghosh initially sought to challenge the decision in the Calcutta High Court’s division bench, but before receiving the order copy, he approached the Supreme Court. In the meantime, CBI officers conducted raids at several locations in Kolkata, including Ghosh’s residence, and arrested him along with three others on September 2. The accused were remanded to CBI custody for eight days.

ED raids Ghosh’s premises

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers on Friday conducted simultaneous search operations at the residences of Sandip Ghosh and three of his associates in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the institute, PTI quoted an officer as saying. The raids were carried out at Ghosh’s residence in Beliaghata and at two locations in Howrah and Subhasgram. All the four are already in CBI custody.”We reached these places around 6.15 am and started our raids,” the officer told PTI.The ED has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against Ghosh, which is analogous to a First Information Report (FIR) in criminal cases.

Ghosh served as principal from February 2021 to September 2023. He was briefly transferred from RG Kar in October 2023 but was reinstated within a month.
