According to the Thane Police, Akshay Shinde succumbed to wounds he sustained amid cross-firing with police officials on Mumbai bypass in the Thane district.
The Thane Police revealed that Shinde snatched a pistol and shot at an assistant police inspector, while trying to escape police custody.
Police had to fire back at the accused who got shot as a result of the firing, and was rushed to a hospital. The incident occurred while Shinde was being escorted to Thane from Taloja jail.
Shinde was accused of assaulting two four-year-old girls in the washroom of the school he worked at as a cleaner between August 12 and 13.
Medical examinations were taken to confirm the accusation after one of the two victims confided in her parents about the crime.The case outraged the nation when it came to light in mid-August, prompting massive protests in Badlapur. Parents came out to question the safety measures taken by schools to protect young girls and students from such crimes.
Bombay High Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter, and an SIT was formed for further investigation.
