Cabinet Meeting Highlights: Three important decisions greenlit by Modi & Co
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved three important decisions on Thursday. These include a large-scale scheme for fortified rice distribution, the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat, and infrastructure improvements in border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab. Here’s a breakdown of these key decisions:

Cabinet Clears Rs 17,082 Crore Fortified Rice Scheme

  • In a significant move to address nutritional deficiencies across India, the Cabinet approved the continuation of the universal supply of fortified rice.
  • This scheme will cover major government programs, including the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), and will run from July 2024 to December 2028.
  • The fortified rice initiative, aimed at reducing anaemia and nutrient deficiencies, will be 100% funded by the central government under PMGKAY.
  • As per the official statement, this effort ensures a unified system for rice fortification across the country, benefiting around 80 crore citizens.

Development of National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat

  • The Cabinet also approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, a project that will highlight India’s rich maritime history.
  • The complex will be built in two phases.
  • The first phase (Phase 1A) is already under construction, with over 60% of the work completed, and is expected to be ready by 2025.
  • Phase 1B, which includes the construction of a Lighthouse Museum, will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.
  • Phases 1A and 1B will be developed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, while Phase 2 will be developed through public-private partnerships (PPP).
  • A separate society, headed by the Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, will be established to manage and oversee the future phases of this project.

Border Infrastructure Development in Rajasthan and Punjab

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of 2,280 km of roads in the border areas of Rajasthan and Punjab, with an investment of Rs 4,406 crore.
  • This project aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s focus on enhancing infrastructure in border regions, aiming to boost rural livelihoods, improve travel, and ensure better connectivity with the national highway network.
  • The initiative is part of a broader effort to transform these border areas into vibrant villages, with improved roads, telecom connectivity, water supply, healthcare, and education facilities.
