New Delhi: Sikkim has launched the fourth and final expedition for study of high-risk glacial lakes in the state. The expedition, from Nov 27 to Dec 5, will focus on designing robust glacial flood mitigation strategies at high altitudes and sub-zero temperature scenarios.
The expedition team has already reached Thangu.
Sikkim was the site of a disastrous Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in October 2023 that claimed nearly a hundred lives and is now working on a major GLOF risk mapping and mitigation exercise with assistance from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The latest expedition will explore two mitigation proposals- namely lowering the lake water level at Shako chho and a retention structure at Dolma Sampa.
