Mirwaiz Umar Farooq lauds J&K police for action against drug peddlers

Srinagar: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Monday appreciated the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their crackdown on drug dealers and peddlers, stating that good measures by the administration should be acknowledged and appreciated.

Mirwaiz, while addressing a gathering in Srinagar, expressed concern over the escalating drug addiction in J&K which has snowballed into an epidemic.

“There is an urgent need for collective action to improve societal conditions, particularly by focusing on the escalating issue of drug addiction. Over 15 lakh individuals are affected by drug addiction. We need a united effort to combat this epidemic,” said Mirwaiz.

He pointed at the vast network of mosques across the region that could serve as pivotal centres to fight against drug addiction. “Masjid committees can collaborate and implement effective ways to tackle drug addiction in every area as community involvement is key to curb this menace,” said Mirwaiz adding, “Residents can keep an eye on suspected people in the area and help in their rehabilitation as well.”

“Arrests of several drug dealers and the confiscation of their properties should be lauded and it is encouraging to see the administration taking decisive steps,” said Mirwaiz.
