SC dismisses plea against road blocking by farmers
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a fresh plea, seeking directions against blocking of national highways by farmers who are protesting near the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana.

A bench headed by justice Surya Kant said that a PIL pertaining to farmers’ protest was already pending before the top court. “Why was this plea filed? It gives a wrong impression. We have taken some initiatives and despite that you come here,” the bench verbally told the petitioner. The SC was referring to a plea in which it has formed an expert committee to look into the demands of farmers.

Refusing to entertain the fresh plea, the SC said, “There is already one PIL pending on the same subject. We will not entertain more petitions on the same issue, thus dismissed.” The bench, however, granted the petitioner the liberty to assist the court in the pending matter.

The farmers, among other things, have been demanding a legal guarantee for minimum support price for their produce and loan waivers. At present, the farmers have suspended their march to Delhi after facing tear gas shells from the Haryana police on Sunday at the Shambhu border.
