Shimla weather update: IMD issues yellow alert; Check the temperature this week
Shimla is gearing up for a chilly day with a mix of rain or snow on the cards, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The maximum temperature is expected to peak at 13.0°C, while the minimum will hover around a cold 4.0°C. Residents and visitors are advised to layer up and carry umbrellas to stay prepared for the weather.

Today’s Highlights

  • Sunrise: 07:16 AM
  • Sunset: 05:24 PM
  • Moonrise: 12:13 AM
  • Moonset: 12:26 PM

In addition to the cold, Shimla’s air quality is flagged as a concern today, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 122, classified under “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” The primary pollutant is PM2.5, known for its potential health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions.

Air Quality Advisory

According to data from AQICN.org, residents in sensitive groups are urged to stay indoors as much as possible, use air purifiers, and wear N95 masks if outdoor activity is unavoidable. “PM2.5 can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, causing issues like asthma, lung disease, and heart attacks,” the report explains.

For others, short outdoor activities may be manageable, but caution is advised. Prolonged exposure to the polluted air could still pose risks, even to healthy individuals.

Weather and Air Quality Trends for the Week

The IMD forecasts Shimla’s weather to remain cold, with occasional rain or snow throughout the week. While temperatures will fluctuate between 14.0°C and 3.0°C, air quality will persist in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range.

Date Max Temp (°C) Min Temp (°C) Weather AQI (PM2.5) AQI Category
2024-12-23 13.0 4.0 Rain or Snow 122 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2024-12-24 14.0 4.0 Partly Cloudy 142 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2024-12-25 15.0 3.0 Mainly Clear Sky 129 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2024-12-26 15.0 3.0 Mainly Clear Sky 129 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2024-12-27 14.0 3.0 Partly Cloudy 118 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups
2024-12-28 14.0 3.0 Rain 118 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups

Shimla has been experiencing fluctuating weather patterns, with yesterday’s high at 17.4°C—4.0°C above the seasonal norm—and a low of 4.0°C, slightly below the average. Humidity levels measured at 42% in the morning and 53% by evening. No rain was recorded in the past 24 hours.Air quality remains a consistent challenge in the region, with PM2.5 particles as the leading contributor to pollution. These tiny particles, measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, originate from vehicle emissions, industrial activities, fires, and dust. They are considered particularly harmful as they can deeply penetrate the lungs and enter the bloodstream.

Preventive Measures

To mitigate health risks associated with poor air quality, experts recommend:

  • Staying indoors with windows closed.
  • Using air purifiers where possible.
  • Avoiding outdoor exercise and smoking.
  • Ventilating homes only briefly when outdoor air improves, typically after rain.
  • Wearing an N95 mask for essential outdoor activities.

Shimla braces for a wintry day with rain or snow expected alongside persistent air quality concerns. The IMD and AQICN.org emphasise precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups, due to an AQI of 122.
