Steve Smith set the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) ablaze as he scored his third Big Bash League (BBL) century during the Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers match of the BBL season 2024-25 on January 11 (Saturday). Steve Smith marked his highly anticipated return to BBL scoring an unbeaten 121-run knock off just 64 balls, helping the Sydney Sixers post a massive total of 222. Smith also went level with Ben McDermott for the record of most BBL hundreds in the league’s history.
Smith, who opened the innings alongside Josh Philippe, was comparatively slower with run-scoring in the initial phase of his innings. He took 36 balls to reach his half-century. He had hit seven fours and no sixes in his fifty. Smith, however, shifted gears and blasted his third BBL century in just 58 balls, striking seven sixes and 10 boundaries in total.

Smith Equals Record For Most BBL Hundreds
Smith made history by equaling the BBL record for most centuries. He now shares the top spot for the most centuries in the Australian T20 league, with three tons each, alongside Ben McDermott. However, important to note, Smith has played only 32 BBL matches since his debut in 2011, while McDermott has featured in 100.
Smith’s century in the BBL sends a stern message to the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises that he still has the ability to excel in T20 cricket. Notably, Smith has not been able to get any bids and has been going unsold in the recent IPL auctions. He has been absent from the league since 2022.
