
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently conducted a review meeting in Mumbai to assess the Indian cricket team’s performance in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 where they they went down to Australia by 3-1 and subsequently failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. During the meeting, which was attended by key figures such as Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, and Ajit Agarkar, a strong emphasis was placed on highlighting the importance of domestic red-ball cricket.
India’s loss in the BGT, along with their first home Test series clean-sweep in over two decades against New Zealand, where they lost 3-0, has raised concerns about the future of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in international cricket. Resultantly, has mandated for the centrally contracted players to participate in domestic tournaments.

Rohit Sharma
Team India captain was spotted training with the Mumbai Ranji team and also turned up for the side’s practice session at the MCA-BKC ground in Mumbai is highly likely to feature in their clash against Jammu and Kashmir, set to begin from January 23.
Virat Kohli
Kohli, who last featured in a Ranji match back in 2012, was named in the probable list of Delhi for the red-ball domestic tournament. However, his participation is subject to his availability.
Shubman Gill
India’s top-order batter, Shubman Gill, is expected to feature for Punjab in their sixth-round Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in Bengaluru on January 23, following a below-par performance in the Test series against Australia.
Rishabh Pant
Alongside Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant’s name has also been included in Delhi’s probables. Furthermore, the India wicketkeeper-batter has made himself available for Delhi’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra, which starts in Rajkot on January 23. Pant last played in the Ranji Trophy during the 2017-2018 season.

India Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has notified the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for the team’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to be played in Mumbai on January 23.
