Gautam Gambhir has been on a sticky wicket as India’s head coach after the team’s poor show on the tour of Australia, where they lost the five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy series 1-3. But his unbeaten coaching record in the T20Is and his partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav as the leadership group puts India in good space ahead of the series-opening T20I against England in Kolkata on Wednesday.
With 6/6 wins so far in T20Is, coach Gambhir will look to extend his run in the five-match series against England.

Surya’s relationship with Gambhir goes back to their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders and the skipper said the camaraderie has continued in national colours, albeit in different capacities.
“I’ve had the privilege of spending a lot of time with him. I know how he works. Without saying a word, he can read your mind,” said Surya at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
“His coaching style is very simple. He gives us a lot of freedom and allows players to express themselves. He keeps everything straightforward and understands what’s going on in the minds of the players.”
Gambhir won the IPL as KKR captain in 2012 and 2014, besides taking the team all the way to its third trophy as a mentor in 2024.
“He ensures a light, relaxed atmosphere in the dressing room, which helps players perform at their best. We’re definitely moving in the right direction,” said Surya.
