Did PM Modi discuss Adani bribery allegations with Trump? Here’s what he said
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday was asked about bribery allegations against businessman Gautam Adani and if anything was discussed with US President Donald Trump during his meeting with him.

Modi said, “India is a democracy and our culture is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, we consider the whole world as one family. I believe every Indian is mine. Two prominent leaders of two countries never discuss such individual issues.”

Adani bribery charges

Under former President Joe Biden, the US Department of Justice had charged Adani for allegedly being part of a scheme to pay over $250 million (about ₹2,100 crore) bribe to officials in exchange of favourable terms for solar power contracts.
This was allegedly concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project, resulting in the charges against the businessman.

Trump took over from Biden only months after bribery charges surfaced. He signed an executive order directing the Department of Justice to pause enforcement of a nearly half-century-old law used to investigate the Adani Group.

In the order, Trump asked “the Attorney General to review guidelines and policies governing investigations and enforcement actions under the FCPA” in 180 days.
“During the review period, the Attorney General shall cease initiation of any new FCPA investigations or enforcement actions, unless the Attorney General determines that an individual exception should be made,” it said.

Adani’s response

The businessman responded to the allegations against the conglomerate saying that the legal matter involving the US Department of Justice is a challenge which the Adani Group has faced “not for the first time”.

“As most of you would have read, less than two weeks back, we faced a set of allegations from the US about compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. This is not the first time we have faced such challenges. What I can tell you is that every attack makes us stronger and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group,” said Adani said.
