Cash for jobs case: Supreme Court issues notice to CBI on ex-WB minister Partha Chatterjee’s bail plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a bail plea filed by Partha Chatterjee, former West Bengal education minister.

The MLA is under CBI arrest in a cash-for-jobs case. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant issued notice to CBI.

Chatterjee and co-accused had initially petitioned the Calcutta High Court seeking bail. However, in November, a division bench delivered a split verdict on the bail pleas.

While one of the judges granted bail to all accused, the other denied bail to Partha Chatterjee and four other officials of the education department (co-accused in the case).

The matter then came before a single bench, which refused to grant bail to Chatterjee and four other officials. Challenging the above two orders (the split verdict order and the single bench order denying bail), Chatterjee petitioned the Supreme Court.

In December, the apex court had granted Chatterjee bail in the connected money laundering case with effect from February 1, 2025.The cash-for-jobs case pertains to allegations of illegal recruitment of assistant teachers under the West Bengal Board of Primary Education.
