Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha on Friday said that preservation and promotion of heritage is crucial for sustainable development of the cities and to improve urban quality of life.

The LG spoke during the visit to four-day heritage festival organized by the administration in Srinagar in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, which concluded on Friday evening. The heritage festival titled ‘Soen Meeras’ saw participation of youth, artisan community and locals, who got a sneak peak into the traditional life of the region. “I believe culture is a way of life and we must involve young generations, inheritors of our rich legacy, to protect cultural and natural heritage…welfare of artisan community and folk-artists is one of my prime objectives,” said Sinha, who also released a book here.

During the festival, the activities were spread across the centre of Srinagar city from Kashmir Haat to the banks of river Jhelum and Dal Lake, where students showcased traditional life in Srinagar and villages. Traditional costumes and mud hutments with thatched roofs remained a highlight. Some of the participants also engaged in painting, calligraphy and traditional sports activities like ‘Saze Loeng’.

The administration in Srinagar led by Deputy Commissioner Bilal Mohiuddin, had also invited artists of paper-mache, pottery and other traditional handicrafts, whose demonstrations and exhibitions highlighted the rich culture, tradition and art of the region. “This festival will provide a vibrant stage for the present generation to learn about their cultural background and develop a strong sense of belonging within their community,” said Mohiuddin.
