The IPL 2024 Winners, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have named a new captain for the team to defend their title in the upcoming edition. After Shreyas Iyer, KKR have appointed veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with seam-bowling all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer serving as vice-captain.
Rahane’s appointment marks a remarkable turnaround in his T20 career. Once considered past his prime in the format, he went unsold in the initial rounds of the IPL auction following a modest stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, KKR saw value in his experience and composure, securing him at his base price of Rs 1.50 crore in the accelerated auction.

Since rejoining the IPL, Rahane has revived his career with a dominant domestic season. Leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 469 runs at an average of 58.62 and a strike rate of 164.56, reinforcing his credentials as a leader.
‘It’s An Honour To Lead KKR’: Rahane
Accepting the captaincy role, Rahane said: “It’s an honour to lead KKR, one of the most successful IPL franchises. We have an excellent and balanced squad, and I look forward to working with everyone to take on the challenge of defending our title.”
Venkatesh Iyer was acquired by KKR for Rs 23.75 crore in the mega-auction and will serve as vice-captain.
Announcing the leadership appointments, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said: “We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader. Also, Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings strong leadership qualities. We are confident they will work well together as we begin our title defence.”
KKR will begin their IPL 2025 campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens on Saturday, 22 March.
