Manipur: Churachandpur district tense after attack on Hmar leader; admin imposes prohibitory orders
Guwahati: Tension escalated on Monday after a leader of the Hmar tribe was assaulted by unknown miscreants in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Sunday, with people demanding identification of the perpetrators. The district administration has clamped prohibitory orders in the district.

“Reports have been received from the Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur, indicating a serious apprehension of a breach of law and order in the district, which is likely to disturb peace and tranquillity among different communities and may lead to damage to life and public property,” the prohibitory order stated. The order prohibited unauthorised processions or unlawful assemblies of five or more persons. It also banned the carrying of arms.

A senior police officer said there was stone pelting in some areas. Protesters have been trying to enforce a shutdown in the town, urging shops to close immediately. Group of people with sticks were patrolling the streets.

Hmar Inpui, the apex tribal body of the Hmar community, stated it was shocked over the brutal attack on its general secretary, Richard Laltanpuia Hmar around 7.30pm on Sunday. He was caught by a group of men while on his way home, blindfolded and incessantly beaten inside a school campus despite him revealing his identity. He is undergoing medical treatment due to excessive bleeding and injury.
