Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer has revealed his batting position for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The IPL 2024-winning captain confirmed that he will bat at number three as he aims to use the opportunity to make a comeback to the Indian T20 side. Notably, Iyer recently played a key role for India at No. 4 during their unbeaten campaign to win the Champions Trophy 2025 edition in Dubai.
In IPL 2024, when he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title, Iyer mostly batted at No. 4, though he occasionally dropped down to No. 5 or No. 6 based on the team’s requirements.
Shreyas Iyer Clear About Batting At No. 3 In IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer said he is clear about batting at No. 3 in IPL 2025, aiming to cement his spot in India’s T20 side and added that he only needs coach Ricky Ponting’s approval for the role.
“We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be No. 3. And that’s what I’m focusing at. I wouldn’t say that we are planning and thinking about what number I will be batting,” Iyer said at a press conference ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
“This time I’m quite clear about that position. And I’m going to be focusing on that number. As long as the coach approves of me.”

Iyer is set to reunite with coach Ricky Ponting, with whom he enjoyed a successful stint at Delhi Capitals, guiding the team to playoffs from 2019 to 2021, including a runner-up finish in 2020. Punjab Kings shelled out INR 26.75 crore (approximately USD 3.18 million) to acquire Iyer at the IPL mega auction last year, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL auction history.
PBKS will open their IPL 2025 edition against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
