Shortly after the session for the lower house convened at 11am, speaker Om Birla adjourned it. The decision was taken amidst protests by treasury benches over remarks by Sonia Gandhi criticising the government.
Following the resumption of the session at 12 noon, Opposition MPs were heard chanting slogans, causing a ruckus in the lower house.
Amidst the din, Birla announced the key decisions that saw Parliamentary light this session, and adjourned the house sine die.
The sine die adjournment motion is given when no definitive date for resumption of proceedings are announced.
Hence, when a Parliamentary house adjourns sine die, it commences back in the next session of the house. In this case, the House will resume proceedings during the monsoon session, 2025.Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha saw two adjournments on the same day. India’s Vice President and Speaker of the House, Jagdeep Dhankar adjourned Rajya Sabha till 12 noon, and then again until 1 PM. This, too, was caused amidst ruckus in the upper house of Parliament. This session witnessed a whirlwind of debates, discussions, and dissent from the Opposition.
From agitation over Trump’s tariffs to an uproar over the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha saw several moments of intense debate, heated arguments, adjournments, and protests.
