A few months ago, fans of actor Abhay Deol got together and planned an event that was truly unique for the Indian space, and even the actor wished that he had been there. Abhay Deol’s fans in Delhi hosted a ‘Abhay Deol lookalike competition’ and in a recent interview, Abhay said that if he knew about this event, he would have surely dropped by to cheer for them.
In a chat with MensXP, Abhay said that he only got to know about the event when he saw pictures online. “I didn’t know about it. Honestly, if I knew, then I would have definitely come for it but I saw it when it happened. That’s when I learnt about it,” he said and added, “I felt bad that I wasn’t there. I wish I was there. I was very touched. I am very shy that way. I don’t like to be in public too much but when I see something like that, I feel like ‘Haye yaar, yahan pe aa jata toh acha hota (It would have been good if I came here)’. It’s something creative, it’s fun.”

In the same chat, Abhay Deol was asked if there was anything he would change about Bollywood and the actor spoke about the increasing PR culture. “Like calm down a little bit,” he said and added, “Jo dikhta hai voh bikta hai (What you see is what sells) so as long as we get the eyeballs, it’s fine. It’s becoming like that all over the world.”
Abhay recalled that he did not indulge in PR when he started his career in 2005 and shared that now, it is a part of the system so there is no getting away from it. “PR is a part of the structure now. There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said and recalled that he had some very strict rules when he started. “When I started, I said I won’t endorse a brand, I won’t become the face of a corporate, I won’t do PR because I came from that sort of left-leaning idealist artistic space and now there’s no space for it anymore,” he said. Abhay shared that he has given in now and during a meeting with the person who handles his PR, Abhay said that it “felt wrong” to him as he had never done something like this.
Abhay Deol will next be seen in the film Bun Tikki which also stars Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman.
