Lewis Hamilton to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari in 2025: Reports

Lewis Hamilton, 7-times Formula 1 champion, is set to join Ferrari from Mercedes for the 2025 season, according to various news reports.

Though Mercedes and Ferrari are yet to comment publicly on the matter, the reports state that Hamilton will join as a replacement for Spanish driver Carlos Sainz.

The 39-year-old Hamilton who has been associated with Mercedes since 2013 had won his first title in 2008 when he was the member of McLaren. His current contract with Mercedes is expected to expire next year.

“I do believe we have a North Star now. Which I don’t think we’ve had for two years. But still getting there is not a straight line. I think we understand the car so much better. They have developed great tools in the background. So naturally, I’m hopeful, but I’m not going to hold my breath,” Hamilton had said last year to BBC, sounding confident that Mercedes would be able to recover from a couple of poor seasons and challenge Red Bull.

Hamilton is the most successful driver in F1 history with 103 wins and 104 pole positions with only Michael Schumacher being the other driver who has seven world titles.

Last year, ahead of the final race of the season at Abu Dhabi, rumours had swirled that Hamilton has been angling for a move to Red Bull. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told a newspaper that Hamilton’s representatives had approached him earlier in the year to ask whether there would be any interest to sign Hamilton — who inked a two-year-contract with Mercedes in August — for the team.

Hamilton, though, dismissed the claim, saying that neither he nor his team representatives had contacted Horner.

“I’ve not approached Christian. I haven’t spoken to him for years, no one from my team has,” Hamilton said before adding that he had checked with everyone in his team to confirm if anyone had reached out on his behalf.
