Actor Sunny Deol is gearing up for his upcoming project Jaat alongside Randeep Hooda and Vineet Kumar Singh, which has been directed by Gopichand Malineni. While promoting the film, Deol shared his thoughts on working with Shah Rukh Khan again and also gave insights on his film Lahore 1947 directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. SRK and Sunny worked on Yash Chopra’s Darr which made headlines due to their acrimonious relationship on set. The duo has since buried the hatchet.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Deol talked about his career, inspirations and all of his upcoming conquests, such as Jaat, Lahore 1947 and Ramayana. While talking about the changing sphere that is Bollywood and the subgenre of ‘two-hero’ films, he mentioned an actor with whom he wouldn’t mind sharing the screen. Deol said, “I have worked with Shah Rukh on only one film, but we could do another one. It would be nice because that was a different period and this is a different period, but the problem is that directors don’t have as much control as they used to have, and stories that can justify the image of such actors are not being written.”
Deol and Shah Rukh worked together in Darr (1993), directed by Yash Chopra, but the collaboration spewed controversy as Deol protested the nature in which his character was portrayed. While Sunny was the hero of the film, Shah Rukh Khan — who played a grey character — was given the top billing. After that, the duo reportedly did not speak to each other for 16 years.
Talking about reuniting with director Rajkumar Santoshi, Deol shared that he thinks everyone is excited about them working together, as people have shown love to the three films they have done in the past, which include Damini (1993), Ghayal (1990) and Ghatak (1996). “We had been working on Lahore for many years, and many different actors heard the story and were considered for the film, but it couldn’t be done. But then again, Gadar 2 has made it happen. I was surprised when Aamir approached me and said, ‘Sunny, we want to make this film,’ because I never thought of an actor producing the film.”
While addressing the timeline of his upcoming films, he revealed the reason behind the delay of Lahore 1947 and said, “I started shooting for Lahore 1947 before Jaat, but the reason that it is taking more time is because Aamir is the producer and he wants to take his time and see everything, and he wants everything to be perfect.”
Jaat is set to hit the theatres on April 10, while Lahore 1947 is speculated to have its release in June.
