Tahawwur Rana to land in India soon after successful extradition from US with high security

Tahawwur Rana, one of the key accused of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has been extradited to India after years of legal battles and is expected to land on Indian soil soon, reported TimesNow citing sources.

Sources have confirmed to TimesNow that Rana’s security during transit and post-arrival will be under tight surveillance, with the government taking extensive measures to prevent any potential security breaches. As such, Rana will be accompanied by highly trained commandos including an inner cordon formed by the elite Central Forces.

Moreover, given the high-profile nature of his case, authorities have confirmed that Rana’s threat perception is high.

Upon arrival in India, the former military doctor will be immediately escorted to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters for further questioning.

Meanwhile, Rana will likely be housed in a high-security ward in the national capital’s Tihar Jail.

Not in custody: US BOP

Earlier, the US Bureau of Prisons (BOP) informed that Rana is is no longer in their custody.

As of April 8, 2025, the BOP’s website stated that Rana is “Not in BOP Custody.” Moreover, BOP official confirmed to PTI on Wednesday that Rana is no longer under their custody.

However, the official clarified that while the inmate locator indicates “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” it doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual has been fully released. Rana could still be under the jurisdiction of another law enforcement or correctional agency, or possibly on parole or supervised release.

The BOP’s inmate locator lists Rana’s register number as “22829-424,” alongside his age, race, and sex, and confirms his status but not his exact whereabouts.
