Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 11 in Indian Premier League 2025. However, CSK suffered a big blow just a day before this match – captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the entire season due to a serious elbow injury.
With Gaikwad sidelined, MS Dhoni has once again taken over the reins of the team as captain. While Dhoni’s return to leadership grabs headlines, the big question now is: who will replace Gaikwad in the batting lineup?
CSK may turn to young talent Ayush Mhatre
To fill the gap left by Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could give a chance to 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre.
A while ago, CSK had invited Mhatre for trials. At that time, with a fully fit squad, his inclusion seemed unlikely. But now, with Gaikwad out, the door may open for the young and promising right-hander. Despite going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Mhatre’s recent form and fearless approach could make him a strong contender to break into the CSK squad this season.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form in IPL 2025 had been disappointing prior to his injury. In the last match against Punjab Kings, he was dismissed after scoring just one run, continuing a string of lackluster performances that added pressure to CSK’s top order.
CSK’s struggles continue in IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings have had a tough start to the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League. Out of five matches played so far, the team has lost four.
Despite beginning the season with a win, CSK failed to maintain momentum and slipped into a losing streak.
The batting line-up has been a major concern – Rachin Ravindra has failed to convert his starts into impactful innings, and Ruturaj couldn’t find form before his injury. Even MS Dhoni, usually reliable in the death overs, hasn’t been able to steer the team to victory as a finisher.
