Jaat box office collection Day 1: Sunny Deol-starrer is no Gadar 2, earns Rs 9.5 cr on opening day

Jaat Box Office Collection Day 1: Sunny Deol delivered the biggest hit of his 40-year career with 2023’s Gadar 2, and soon afterwards, he signed on to a string of projects, including Jaat, Border 2 and Lahore 1947. The first film of the lot, Jaat, has hit the screens and it doesn’t look like it will share the same fate as Gadar 2. A sequel to the 2001 hit Gadar, made around Rs 40 crore on its opening day. Jaat has made Rs 9.5 crore nett in India on its first day, as per Sacnilk.

Jaat was released on Thursday, which was a holiday across many parts of north India for Mahavir Jayanti. The movie witnessed a 14 percent occupancy. In the Delhi-NCR region, the film had 1472 shows and witnessed around 19 percent occupancy. In the Mumbai region, the film had around 984 shows with approximately 11 percent occupancy.

Tthe biggest Hindi film of the year so far has been the Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava, which made Rs 31 crore on its opening day. The next two spots are occupied by Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar and Akshay Kumar-starrer Sky Force. Sikandar earned around Rs 26 crore, and Sky Force earned a little over Rs 12 crore. Sikandar tanked at the box office and trade analysts accused Sky Force of tampering its numbers. Jaat is now the fourth-biggest opener of the year, followed by Shahid Kapoor-starrer Deva, which made Rs 5.5 crore on opening day.

Jaat’s collections might appear minor in comparison to Gadar 2, but are far better than any of Sunny’s other recent films. Sunny had a string of flops for 22 years between Gadar and Gadar 2, with some films like the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise and Apne doing marginally well. Both these films also starred Bobby Deol and Dharmendra.

Sunny, and the industry, is betting big on his stardom as he has some big productions coming up. Border 2, which is the sequel of his 1997 hit Border, will also star Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, among others, and is expected to release in 2026. He recently shared that the film will be set in 1971. The first film was also set during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

Sunny will also reunite with director Rajkumar Santoshi for Lahore 1947, which is being produced by Aamir Khan. Sunny and Rajkmar worked together in films like Ghayal, Ghatak and Damini. They fell apart during the making of their rival Bhagat Singh films in the early 2000s and hadn’t collaborated since then.
