US Vice President JD Vance, who is on a visit to India, on Tuesday said he was in the country to strengthen relations, adding that Trump rejects ‘failed’ ideas that claim that India, US cannot grow.

“Trump wants America and India to grow. We want to build a bright new world, with you,” Vance said.

Vance also acknowledged the fact that the US saw India as cheap labour earlier. “Not here to preach how you should make decisions, prior US admin behaved with India ‘condescendingly,” Vance said adding that India will not be held back.

Talking about the trade relations Vance said trade talks between the two nations are hard at work and that there were common goals. “India, America have finalised terms of reference for a trade deal,” he added.

“Future of 21st Century will be determined by India-US partnership.”

Energy ties

Vance highlighted the two nations’ have much to gain by strengthening energy ties. “America, India are hard at work to ‘drill baby drill’,” he said. The US vice president also talked about the US administration recognising cheap dependable energy which it wants to sell to India. He added that the US wanted to help India explore offshore gas reserve and critical minerals supplies. He further said that America’s energy could help realise India’s nuclear goals.

Tariff talks

Talking about tariffs, Vance said that Americans want further access to Indian markets and that India should consider dropping some of the non-tariff barriers for easier access to the market.

“Critics have attacked my president, President Trump, for starting a trade war in an effort to bring back the jobs of the past, but nothing could be further from the truth. He seeks to rebalance global trade so that America, with friends like India, can build a future worth having for all of our people together,” he said.
