Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif urges UN chief to ‘counsel India’ to ‘exercise restraint’

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to “counsel India” to “act responsibly” and “show restraint”, following a deadly terror attack in Kashmir. In a statement released by Sharif’s office on Tuesday, he said Pakistan would “defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity with full force in case of any misadventure by India.”

He also rejected India’s statement linking Pakistan to the April 22 attack.

The terror strike near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir killed 26 people, mostly tourists, and has been called the deadliest in the region since the Pulwama attack in 2019.

India, holding Pakistan-based terror groups responsible for the massacre, has announced a number of strong measures. These include expelling Pakistani military attachés, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, and immediately closing the Attari land transit point on the India-Pakistan border.
