Pahalgam: When Kashmir suffered one of its deadliest attacks
At least 26 people lost their lives in a brutal terrorist assault in Pahalgam, a well-known tourist hub in Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22.
The attack occurred in the scenic Baisaran Valley, often referred to as ‘mini Switzerland’ for its panoramic views. As tourists enjoyed pony rides around 2:30 p.m., armed assailants opened fire, making it one of the deadliest attacks in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
According to survivors, the attackers—suspected to be six foreign nationals disguised in Army fatigues—targeted victims based on religion. The gunmen reportedly asked names and demanded the recitation of Islamic verses before shooting at close range. The ambush unfolded around 1:30 p.m. in Baisaran meadow, roughly 7 km from Pahalgam, accessible only on foot or horseback. The area, popular with tourists for its snow-laden peaks and pine forests, was crowded at the time. Among the deceased were 25 Indians, and one foreign national from Nepal.
