Key Measures to Minimize Heat Exposure
In its latest directive, the DOE has emphasized the need to safeguard students from extreme heat during school hours. Schools are prohibited from holding assemblies during the afternoon shift, and “no classes be conducted in open-air environments.” All outdoor activities have been suspended until weather conditions improve.
Hydration and Indoor Comfort
The DOE has stressed the importance of hydration, requiring schools to ensure a continuous supply of clean drinking water. Schools are also instructed to maintain water coolers and RO systems, and to schedule regular water breaks for students.
For indoor comfort, the guidelines call for well-ventilated classrooms and functioning fans. Additionally, the DOE has emphasized the installation of fire extinguishers in all school corridors in compliance with fire safety regulations.
Health and Safety Measures
The DOE has also urged schools to educate students on the importance of protecting themselves from sun exposure. “No student, parent, or staff member shall stay or sit in open or exposed areas under direct sunlight,” the guidelines state. Students are encouraged to cover their heads while commuting in the heat.
Health preparedness has been prioritized, with clear instructions for schools to address any cases of heat-related illness promptly. “First Aid kits should include oral rehydration solution for students exhibiting symptoms. All cases of heat-related illness must be reported to the nearest hospital,” the DOE circular added.The new guidelines aim to ensure the well-being of students during this period of extreme heat, prioritizing safety and comfort within school premises.
