Michael Bolton, the Grammy-winning artist who gave the world soulful hits for decades, is now battling against the most aggressive kind of brain cancer. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the singer for the first time opened up about the shocking diagnosis and the symptoms nobody caught. However, in a follow-up interview with the publication, his daughter revealed how his family missed out on one of the major signs that started showing up during one of their family gatherings.
Meanwhile, the 72-year-old revealed he was diagnosed with glioblastoma in December 2023. Just days after Thanksgiving, Michael was rushed into an emergency surgery after doctors found a brain tumour. “You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,” Bolton, whose speech was clearly impacted by the treatment, said during the interview, where he was joined by his two daughters. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”

‘Michael kept bowling out of turn’
Michael Bolton’s daughter Taryn described a “super weird” incident where the signs were creeping in quietly. According to her, back in fall 2023, everything seemed fine. Michael was performing, doing interviews, filming, even appearing on The Masked Singer—until one day, the family decided to have a family bowling night out. And Michael kept bowling out of turn. Over and over. It didn’t seem like a big deal at first, but it wasn’t like him. “That was when we were like, ‘Something’s wrong with his brain,’” said Taryn.
Looking back now, they think they missed out on several things. “Everything that happened was weird for him but not super alarming. When you look back at everything together… we missed so many things.” Even before the incident, in November, while performing for a charity event, Michael suddenly became exhausted by nausea and balance issues, and thankfully, his daughters were there. “Is this stress? Is this sleep?” Taryn remembers wondering. “He’d been working nonstop that whole time. Travelling, doing shows, doing all of these things.” Later, what followed was headaches. Losing balance. Falling out of a chair. And not from drinking — Michael doesn’t even drink. But at the time, they explained it away as stress, exhaustion, or ageing.
“He was in recovery in the hospital room singing within minutes,” said his daughter Holly. And the nurses? They were stunned. One even asked, “Do you know he sings like this?

Michael Bolton diagnosed with glioblastoma
According to the experts who spoke to the publication, only 30 to 40 percent of people diagnosed with such a rare kind of brain cancer get the entire tumour removed, and yes, Michael was one of them. However, the real issue with this deadly disease is that it tends to grow back even after the removal. For Michael, a second surgery came in January due to infection. Although he finished up radiation and chemo in October, now he gets scanned every two months. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option,” he told PEOPLE in his deeply moving interview, yet he didn’t lose his humour, as he added, “You’re really quickly drawn into a duel. I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”
At 72 and juggling a lot of training, exercise, and healthy eating habits, he says he’s got a new song title in mind: “Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight.” Michael spends time surrounded by his daughters and his six grandkids: Amelia (14), Olivia (13), Dylan (11), Grayson (10), River (9), and Jack (8). “Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you’re not alone going through it is a big deal,” says the singer. “It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they’re not alone.”
