NEW DELHI: Eighteen Hindu refugees from Pakistan in Ahmedabad were granted Indian citizenship on Saturday during a camp attended by Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi. The camp, held at the district collector‘s office, saw Sanghavi conferring Indian citizenship to the 18 individuals.
Encouraging them to participate in the country’s development, Sanghavi said, “It is expected that all of you will be determined to participate in the development journey of the country.”
The district collectors of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kutch have the authority to grant Indian citizenship to minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh as per the gazette notifications of 2016 and 2018, an official statement said.
According to the statement, 1,167 Hindu refugees from Pakistan who live in the Ahmedabad have been granted Indian citizenship.
Sanghavi highlighted the efforts of PM Modi and home minister Amit Shah in facilitating Indian citizenship for minorities from neighboring countries.
On March 11, the Union government announced the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which will offer citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
