Ludhiana: Division number 1 police booked a man for stealing a cheque from the drop box of a bank and getting it encashed. Police registered a case against him on the orders of the judicial magistrate.
The accused has been identified as Saurav Gupta, whose address and other details have not been ascertained yet.
Sub-inspector Maninder Kaur, SHO, division number 1 police station said that a case was registered on the orders of judicial magistrate Tanishth Goyal.
Petitioner Manish Sachdeva approached the court saying that he had dropped three cheques in the drop box of UCO Bank, Miller Ganj Branch in 2022. One of them was stolen from the drop box.
Later, he found that the cheque amounting to Rs 1.38 lakh had been encashed by a man called Saurav Gupta.
On being asked if the accused is a bank employee or an acquaintance of the petitioner, the SHO said that as of now, the police only had his name for now. Police have procured CCTV camera footage of the bank, which is being checked to ascertain how the accused managed to steal the cheque from the drop box.
An FIR has been registered under sections 379 (punishment for theft) and 467 (forgery for valuable security, will, etc) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused. Further investigations are on.
