Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation Project Hangs In The Balance | Ludhiana News
Ludhiana: Even as 97% of the Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation project has been completed, civic officials are not clear about expected results. Although sewage treatment plants have started functioning, the condition of the drain will not improve till officials complete installation of the pumping station near gurdwara Gaughat and lay the the 3.5km long sewer line from Sunder Nagar to Kundanpuri.Officials claimed that they could not take a decision as the election code had been enforced.
The MC is embroiled in a legal battle to prove ownership of land for installation of a pumping station near gurudwara Gaughat. Officials maintained that the land belonged to the civic body but an individual had also claimed ownership on part of it. Work was started in the area but had to be stopped midway. Officials said that they would have to identify land somewhere else if the case lingered on. They also said that direct discharge of effluents in the drain would not stop till officials installed the pumping station and laid the sewer line.
Officials allocated Rs 33 crore for the purpose but nothing has been done so far. Authorities said that they had contacted sewerage board officials. MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi admitted that the project would not have the desired results till these issues were taken care of but said that they were trying to find a solution. He added that they would wait for the election code to be lifted before arriving at a conclusion.
The project initially cost Rs 650 crore but tenders were allotted for Rs 519 crore. Existing sewage treatment plants were supposed to be upgraded and a new 225 MLD plant was installed in Jamalpur. Two effluent treatment plants have been installed for treatment of waste water from dairy units in Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes. Pumping stations have also been installed at various locations to solve the problem of direct discharge of effluents into the Buddha Dariya.
Missed deadlines
The project was started on Dec 2, 2020 and was supposed to have been completed in Dec 2022 but the deadline was extended to Aug 31, 2023. It was later fixed at Dec 2023 and has been missed again. Remaining work of ETPs at Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes is near completion and the trial run is on. Officials claimed that most of the work has been done.
