As Water Levels Dip Further, City May Face Dry Days Ahead | Ludhiana News –
Ludhiana: With news about the water crisis in Bangalore going viral, city residents fear that the city may be headed in the same direction. Water level in Ludhiana is decreasing every year as no steps are being taken to recharge ground water. Still rampant digging for ground water has been going on unabated.
The 24×7 canal based water supply project would have offered some hope but the project remains on paper with no implementation on the ground.Civic officials admitted that every year, 10% of their tube wells dried up and needed to be replaced. There are 1,200 tubewells in the city and there are areas where water supply would be a challenge in the summer.
Factors contributing to non-availability of water supply in a few areas include mushrooming of illegal colonies, lack of tubewells, haphazard water supply and sewer connections.
Civil City resident Rahul Sharma said, “The situation is alarming as the city is in a dark zone and at many locations, residents face acute shortage of water supply in the summer season.” He added that what was happening in Bangalore could happen here as well and emphasised the need for an alternative source of water supply.
Rajesh Jain, an environmentalist, said, “No doubt the depletion of ground water is a serious issue but we can take measures like rainwater conservation. Let us not throw precious water into sewage. There are different ways to recharge the Earth. More people should be engaged in water conservation on an individual or colony basis, we are not late yet.”
An MC official said that get water only 100 feet below the ground. A few years back, water could be found 70 feet below the ground, he said. He added that they had to dig 250 to 300 feet to get potable water supply. As for tubewells, he said that digging needed to be done 600 feet below the ground.
On the 24×7 canal based water supply project, MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi said, “The process to complete formalities before issuance of work order to the firm is going on. We are also trying our best to get work started at ground level. The firm is almost finalised and only work order issuance is left. That is to be done at the level of Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Corporation (PMIDC).”
